UTMC takes next step in transition to community hospital

In response to the changing healthcare needs of the Toledo region, The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) has elected to transition to a Level III trauma center.

UTMC notified the American College of Surgeons this week that it desires to change its verification status from a Level I adult trauma center to a Level III trauma center.

“This has been our long-term strategy, and we have been working for several years to transition to a community hospital focused on serving South Toledo,” UTMC CEO Dan Barbee said. “Most recently we have increased our emphasis on primary care and behavioral health, and we will continue to evolve to meet the healthcare needs of our community.”

Earlier this month, UTMC opened the new Comprehensive Care Center, which offers a variety of primary care services, including family medicine, internal medicine, multi-specialty, X-ray and laboratory services, and an on-site pharmacy. Behavioral health services have been expanded in recent years to include inpatient and outpatient recovery services; electroconvulsive therapy, better known by the acronym ECT, as a treatment option for patients with depression; geriatric psychiatry; and child and adolescent psychiatry. Additional services are being discussed based on the community’s needs.

“Our expert physicians, nurses and medical technicians in our emergency department and throughout the medical center remain committed to providing high-quality care to our patients,” Barbee said.

The city of Toledo currently has three Level I trauma programs, making this continued investment unnecessary to fulfill the needs of our community, Barbee said. As part of our long-term strategy, this move enables us to align our operations with the healthcare needs of South Toledo and our surrounding communities.

UToledo launches new brand showcasing how it is Fueling Tomorrows

The University of Toledo is changing the way we talk about who we are and where we are headed.

The new brand, launching today, features the tagline “Fueling Tomorrows” with bold and confident images, typography and messaging that represents the positive momentum on campus and the strength of the University’s future potential.

“We are celebrating our role to empower and prepare individuals who are driven to make an impact on the world,” UToledo President Sharon L. Gaber said. “Fueling Tomorrows encompasses how we champion our students to succeed, how we advance knowledge through our dedication to discovery and how we energize our community and the region.”Billboard with photo of University Hall and the words The University of Toledo

Billboard with photo of University Hall and text The University of ToledoThe new brand sets The University of Toledo apart in the competitive higher education market by embracing a set of core attributes that were developed during the past two years with market research and collaborative input from administrators, faculty, students and alumni. These brand attributes — focused, determined, inquisitive, supportive, innovative, community-minded and impactful — are integral in the University’s new brand.

“The University of Toledo’s students, faculty, staff and alumni are doing incredible things. Our brand highlights the amazing innovations, discoveries and determination exhibited by our University community,” said Dr. Adrienne King, associate vice president of marketing and communications. “This look and feel shows how The University of Toledo is powering possibility and fueling tomorrows.”

As The University of Toledo continues to elevate its reputation on a national scale, it is now using the shortened UToledo instead of UT to distinguish it from other universities that use the two-letter acronym.

The brand embraces a new mobile-first design to the website, a modern and modular approach for marketing materials and a new confident and conversational voice in communications from and about the institution. It does not change the logo or the midnight blue and gold colors that are well-established pillars of the UToledo brand.

The initial brand launch includes a new 30-second video spot, billboards in the Toledo community, banners on campus and digital advertising that embrace the Fueling Tomorrows concept that will roll out during the month of July.

Accreditation restored to UToledo’s Physician Assistant Program

The University of Toledo’s Physician Assistant Studies Program has been granted full accreditation in recognition of the high-quality education provided to students in a program that meets or exceeds national standards.

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) notified the University in a letter sent April 11 that its accreditation has been restored. The program is now on accreditation-continued status, which is in effect until its next review in September 2027. The program had been on accreditation-probation status.

“We are proud ARC-PA recognized our efforts to enhance the quality of our PA program and continually improve on our processes and procedures,” said Dr. Christopher Cooper, dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “We have remained committed to our students in the program throughout this process and are happy to share this positive outcome with them.”

“We are pleased with this outcome and I want to thank the leadership from the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, College of Graduate Studies and the Provost’s Office for their efforts to develop and implement an action plan focused on enriching the academic experience for the students in our Physician Assistant Studies Program,” UToledo President Sharon L. Gaber said.

The University’s accreditation status is:

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Continued status to the University of Toledo Physician Assistant Program sponsored by the University of Toledo. Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation status granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with the ARCPA Standards.

Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the Standards. The approximate date for the next validation review of the program by the ARC-PA will be 2027 September. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the Accreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy.

UToledo graduate programs jump in U.S. News rankings

The University of Toledo’s graduate programs are recognized among the best in the nation, according to the 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings.

The College of Nursing and College of Law, in particular, jumped dramatically in the most recent rankings released Tuesday.

The master’s degree in nursing jumped up to 135 from the previous year’s ranking of 183. The doctor of nursing is ranked 135 compared to 152 the previous year.

The full-time law program is now ranked 126. It had been 137 in the 2019 rankings.

“The significant increases in the U.S. News rankings in just one year reflect the University’s increasingly positive reputation and the progress we are making advancing our academic and research excellence,” President Sharon L. Gaber said. “We are proud of these rankings, but more importantly the outcomes they represent in student success, program quality and accomplished faculty.”

In addition to the nursing and law programs, UToledo’s graduate programs in education and social work moved up in the rankings. Education is now ranked 172 up from 176 and social work is listed as 196 up from 201 the previous year. In addition, the engineering graduate program is now ranked and listed as 148.

The College of Nursing attributes its dramatic 48-point jump in the master’s program and increase of 17 spots in the doctoral program to attracting a more qualified student applicant pool, increasing program accessibility for students, strong graduation rates, and a growing research profile for faculty.

“We are proud of the recognition for our outstanding programs, excellent students and talented faculty, who are leaders in clinical practice, teaching and research,” said Dr. Linda Lewandowski, dean of the College of Nursing.

The 11-point increase in the College of Law rankings reflects improved bar passage results and a higher employment rate 10 months after graduation.

“The reputation of Toledo Law continues to grow in recognition of our strong faculty and commitment to student success, which includes advanced bar exam preparation and career development initiatives,” said D. Benjamin Barros, dean of the College of Law.
