UToledo To Celebrate Class Of 2020 With Virtual Commencement

The University of Toledo is recognizing the Class of 2020 with a virtual commencement ceremony while we cannot celebrate together amid the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The Celebrating Success online ceremony will go live on Saturday, May 9, the same date graduates and their families had planned to celebrate commencement in the Glass Bowl before drastic social distancing measures were required to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The spring commencement ceremony recognizes UToledo’s undergraduate and graduate candidates for degrees. The College of Medicine and Life Sciences and College of Law hold separate graduation ceremonies and also are planning to hold virtual events due to the state’s stay-at-home order.

On the website, utoledo.edu/commencement, graduates and their families can watch videos from President Sharon L. Gaber and other University leaders congratulating them on their successes.

Most importantly, each graduate has the opportunity to be personally recognized. In a traditional live commencement ceremony, a graduate’s name is read as they walk across the stage to be recognized. In this virtual ceremony, each graduate has a custom online graphic display with their name and degree and the opportunity for additional personalization with a photo and recording of their name.

Students interested in personalizing their commencement graphic need to respond to the email request from Marching Order, the company UToledo is working with to host this virtual commencement ceremony, and provide their information by the April 13 deadline.

“I am heartbroken that we cannot have a traditional commencement ceremony this year and it was important to me that we find another way to recognize the perseverance of the Class of 2020,” Gaber said. “I am proud of the way this group of graduates has handled this unprecedented situation and I look forward to celebrating them virtually.”

In the days and weeks leading up to commencement, UToledo will celebrate graduates on social media using #UToledo20. Members of the Class of 2020 are encouraged to share favorite campus memories, mentors who helped them succeed and other stories. UToledo alumni, faculty and staff also will provide words of encouragement and congratulations to the newest UToledo alumni.

UToledo Announces Flexible Grade Options for Students

To help undergraduate and graduate students at The University of Toledo who are concerned about maintaining grades this spring semester, several options are being offered that would allow them to complete their courses without a letter grade or have more time to finish this semester’s coursework.

“We understand this is a challenging time as students have dramatically altered their way of life in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Karen Bjorkman, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “One way we can help during these unprecedented times is to provide more flexibility as students adjust to remote learning for the remainder of the spring semester.”

Students will have the following options:

  • Pass/No Credit (PE/NE) Grade Option — Students can choose to receive a pass/no credit grade for spring semester courses rather than the regular letter grade. This option will have no impact on their GPA.
  • Incomplete (IE) Grade Option — Students can work with their instructors to request a unique Incomplete (IE) that the University is authorizing for this spring term because of the extraordinary circumstances we are in. This Incomplete also has no impact on this semester’s GPA and gives students the ability to complete their coursework by the end of the fall 2020 semester.
  • Withdrawal Deadline Extended — The last day to withdraw from spring classes has been extended to May 1, 2020.

These options are being made available to provide students additional flexibility during this unique situation, however, students are strongly encouraged to contact their faculty and academic advisor to understand the impact these options could have on their program completion, plans for future professional or graduate programs, and/or eligibility for some licensures. Rocket Solution Central is available to answer questions about any financial aid implications.

UToledo Employees To Work Remotely, Spring Commencement Canceled

The University of Toledo is implementing additional measures to help prevent the spread of disease during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Employees will begin working remotely effective Thursday, March 19 with only authorized employees working on campus. Those employees who cannot complete their responsibilities off campus will use paid leave. University leaders will reassess staffing plans on or before April 3.

On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control to not hold events with 50 or more people, UToledo’s spring commencement planned for May 9 in the Glass Bowl is canceled, along with all other related commencement and convocation events. Graduates will be invited to return to campus for the University’s winter commencement ceremonies on Dec. 12.

“We are in unprecedented times as we all grapple with this global coronavirus pandemic. These are difficult, but necessary decisions to ensure the health and safety of our entire campus community,” UToledo President Sharon L. Gaber said. “We are sincerely disappointed that we will not have an opportunity to celebrate our students’ success at spring commencement. We are currently looking for other ways we can recognize the Class of 2020.”

The staffing changes and cancelation of commencement are the latest actions UToledo has taken to address the coronavirus pandemic. As previously announced, all courses will be delivered remotely beginning tomorrow and through the end of the spring semester and students who live on campus are in the process of moving out before residence halls close on March 22.

University of Toledo examining options for future of UTMC

Planning underway to stabilize hospital finances and examine future options

Facing the same economic realities of a rapidly evolving healthcare industry that confront most independent hospitals, the University of Toledo is thoroughly examining the operations and services of the University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) in the context of the current healthcare environment. This is being undertaken to determine the best options moving forward for the well- being of the University, its faculty, staff and students, and the Toledo community.

In recent years, UTMC has responded to the changing demographics and healthcare needs of our community by increasing its focus on primary care with the opening of the Comprehensive Care Center (2019), transitioning its Trauma Center to a Level 3 facility (2019) and expanding behavioral health services with the addition of an in-patient detoxification unit (2017).

“We have been investing in UTMC to help strengthen and expand the services most needed in our region because it is the right thing to do for our employees and the right thing to do for our neighbors,” UToledo President Sharon L. Gaber said. “During this time, we’ve also been closely monitoring the hospital’s financial health. We recognize the challenges at hand and have outlined a process to evaluate options for the future of UTMC.”

The University previously shared that the hospital’s losses for fiscal year 2018 totaled $3.5 million and grew to $7 million in fiscal year 2019. Halfway through the current fiscal year UTMC losses stand at $12.6 million, as reported by UTMC CEO Dan Barbee and UToledo CFO Matt Schroeder to the trustees on Monday.

“Unfortunately, the hospital is in an unsustainable financial position in its current model,” UToledo Board of Trustees Chair Mary Ellen Pisanelli said. “We are determined to work with a sense of urgency to address the hospital’s current financial situation and consider all options for UTMC moving forward. We will be as transparent and inclusive as possible throughout this process.”

UToledo has engaged advisors to review UTMC’s financial information, current service lines, market conditions and changing community needs, current and projected healthcare industry trends and more.

The process is expected to take several months.
