UT and ProMedica present a commemoration of the War of 1812 bicentennial

The University of Toledo and ProMedica will commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 by a special event, “The Surgical Treatment of Battle Injuries – 1812 and 2012,” on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at The Toledo Hilton on Glendale Ave. on The University of Toledo’s Health Science Campus (Media interviews will be offered between 3 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.). The event is open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required. They are obtained by calling 419.291.2059 no later than September 14th.

“The anniversary of the War of 1812 provides an opportunity for fascinating comparison of medical treatment provided to our wounded in battle, then and now,” said Donald F. Melhorn, chairman of ProMedica’s Jobst Vascular Institute Committee. “Always of deep concern, the topic touches many personal, as well as professional lives in and out of the military.”

The event will feature speakers addressing the treatment of battle injuries from 1812 and 2012 from a variety of perspectives:

Walter Rybka, Senior Captain U.S. Brig NIAGRA, “A Remarkable Survival Rate: Usher Parsons and the Treatment of the Battle of Lake Erie’s Wounded”;

Anthony Comerota, MD, FACS, FACC, Director of Jobst Vascular Institute ProMedica Toledo Hospital, “War Injuries and Management: Iraq and Afghanistan”; and

Col. Norman M. Rich, MD, FACS, DMCC Leonard Heaton and David Packard Professor Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences, “A Historical Overview of Battle Injuries: A View from Within.”

Introductory remarks will be made by Jeffrey P. Gold, chancellor, UT executive vice president for biosciences and health affairs, and dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
